Summary:The radiotelephone communication system that links the 5 major islands of Hawaii and some of the engineering problems involved in developing it form the subject matter of this paper. This system, which has been in successful operation for more than 3 years, operates on frequencies between 30 and 60 megacycles per second, although in April 1935, an experimental circuit operating on 220/230 megacycles was placed in service. The successful operation of this system has shown that ultra-high frequencies are well suited to short quasi-optical ranges and that reliable semi-nonattended radiotelephone services are practicable.
