Summary:Individuals requiring hemodialysis experience significant life-style, emotional, and physical changes that affect quality of life. The peer mentor program pairs an individual with hemodialysis experience (mentor) with an individual new to hemodialysis (mentee) to provide support, by sharing lived experiences, which has been associated with improved health outcomes. This article describes the implementation and evaluation of a peer mentor program in a rural setting and identifies the characteristics necessary for the success of a peer-to-peer mentor program.
