Summary:The current levels of antibiotic resistance (AR) concern clinicians, infectious disease specialists, and those working in microbiological research. The problem of AR has been recognized by the ECDC (European Center for Disease Control) as one of the four priorities for public health since 2005. Of the 16 study groups coordinated by the ESCMID (European Society of Clinical Medicine and Infectious Diseases), at least half are involved in the study of AR and in investigating new directions, alternative or complementary to antibiotics, for the development of effective strategies for the prevention and control of infections determined by antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.
