A report issued this week by The Teaching Commission, a bipartisan commission that includes former elected officials, CEOs, school leaders and union representatives, recommends increasing the base pay for teachers, paying teachers for having more responsibilities, paying more to those who teach in hard-to-fill subjects or schools, and tying their salaries to student performance. "If we're going to tie salary to testing, we certainly need to do it in terms of improvement rather than actual scores," said New, chairwoman of the Berkeley County Teacher Forum. "Otherwise, nobody's going to want to teach the kids who need the most help." [Inez Tenenbaum] is approaching the state Legislature this session to look at making the TAP approach available to the state's low- performing schools. Currently, those schools can bring in a teacher specialist, but Tenenbaum said the TAP model may be a better fit because it draws on the experience and leadership skills of teachers already in a school who are more likely to stay with that school.
