Abstract Eutherian sex chromosomes are different from each other in sequence and size; however, X and Y chromosomes pair during male meiosis. Pseudoautosomal region (PAR), which has a homologous sequence on the X and Y chromosomes, is an essential site for pairing. Because obligatory crossover also takes place in the very small region, recombination frequency in PAR is markedly high and hence PAR is highly mutable. Although PAR has been heavily involved in the function and evolution of sex chromosomes, mouse PAR is really enigmatic even after completion of the sequencing project. We recently identified a novel gene located in the mouse PAR in the course of the study of mood disorder and isolated a BAC clone containing most of the entire PAR. The evolution of PAR and sex chromosomes will be discussed, which has been suggested through analysis of the mouse PAR.
