Abstract Steel is prepd. from a metallic charge consisting of scrap and cast iron by a method including successive addition to the furnace of a slagging agent, scrap and cast iron, then melting and adjusting the steel to the desired grade. The metal is carburised during fusion by powdered products blown into the liquid metal using a jet of gas. Specifically, after inserting the slag former into the furnace, a carbonaceous product is inserted along with the scrap. The process is esp. suitable using Martin furnaces fed with liq. cast iron. The time for homogenisation and adjustment to the desired compsn. can be reduced, while the proportion of molten cast iron used is reduced and the scrap increased. Hence, the price of the steel can be lowered. Carbon contents of over 0.3% can be produced in the steel half way through the refining step.
