Summary: | The hearing impaired children cannot hear sounds including speech due to hearing loss itself. Most studiers which are related with speech recognition for the hearing impaired focus the position of the impaired auditory hair cells, not the numbers of the cells on the position. The purpose of this study was to illustrate how many cells need to understand the speech sounds based on sampling theory. Speech is complex sounds which mix low and high frequencies. Three vocabularies are utilized to simulate the changing of the sound to noise ratio(SNR) with sampling rates such as 1/2, 4/1, 1/8 etc. The results of this study were that: (a) the sounds with high frequencies indicated with the lower SNR than those of the low frequencies; and (b) high frequencies required more auditory hair cells which mean more numbers of the sampling frequencies than those of the low frequencies to understand speech sounds. Therefore this study concluded that the hearing impaired children cannot understand speech sounds with high frequencies because of the numbers of the auditory hair cells. KCI Citation Count: 2 |
