Abstract | The honorific subject marker -kkeyse (-께서) in Present-day Korean has two antecedent forms: -kyesye (-겨셔) and -skuysye (-셔). The former began to appear in the second half of the 16th century and the latter did in the first half of the 17th century. Present day's -kkeyse has resulted from blending the two antecedent forms and some sound changes. Originally -skuysye was an honorific ablative marker. The topic of this paper is how it has developed into a subject marker. I believe that it is hardly or very rarely possible for an ablative marker to develop spontaneously into a subject marker. We should pay attention to the similar shapes of -kyesye and -skuysye, which were phonemically /kjəsjə/ and /k'ɨjsjə/, respectively. I argue that through semantic contamination -skuysye has gained its function as a subject marker from -kyesye, the preexisting honorific subject marker. KCI Citation Count: 0 |
