근대 대구 문화예술계에 표출된 정신성

일제시기를 중심으로 한 근대에 영남의 중심지 대구는 문화예술 면에서 특별한 지역이었다. 사회운동에서, 문학계에서, 미술계에서, 사진계에서 공통으로 관통하는 놀랄만한 정신적 광맥이 존재한다. 다름 아니라 ‘민족정신의 발양’이다. 당시는 이들 각 영역이 오늘날처럼 분리 독립되지 않은 융합된 상태에서, 의식 있는 지역의 선각자들이 상통하면서 하나로 결속 된 이념의 도가니로 묶을 수 있었다. 1907년을 중심으로 한 근대초엽의 서상돈·김광제를 비롯한 국채보상의 사회운동, 백기만·이상화·현진건을 비롯한 문학계, 서병오를 종주로 한 사군자화의 지속과 김용준·이인성·이쾌대를 비롯한 초창기 서양화단, 구왕삼을 중심으로 한 사진계, 이들 문화예술 전체분야에 걸쳐 그 속을 관통하는 하나의 정신성이 있었다. 그들의 중심에는 시인 이상화·이상화의 백부 이일우·친형 이상정·화가 서병오·미술이론가 김용준·화가 이쾌대의 친형 이명건 등이 있었다. 이들은 당시 대구의 문화예술계의 선각자들로서 하나같이 배일排日의 민족주의자들이었다. 이상화는 원래 민족주의자 집안출신으로, 특히 백부 이일우는 철저한 배일 민족주의자로 국채보상운동과 교육사업을 펼쳤다. 친형 이상정은 독립 운동가이자 화가이기도 했다. 미술계에서는 민족미술 수립을 목표로 한 김용준이 주도하여 1930년에 ‘향토회’를 조직한다. 지금까지는 이 ‘향토회’ 결성이 단지 일본인의 강요에 의한 것이라고 오인되고 있었다. 역시 민족주의자이자 독립운동가이면서 화가인 이명건(李名建, 호 如星)은 화가인 동생 이쾌대에게 크게 영향을 미친다. 이쾌대는 민족미술수립에 심취하여 당시 헐벗고 굶주린 민중의 군상을 적나라하게 표출하고 있었다. 여기에 초창기 한국사진계의 중심지였던 대구에서, 구왕삼은 민족주의 시각에서 피사체를 선정하여 작품화하고 있었다. 그럼에도 지금까지는 그가 단순히 리얼리즘 작가 정도로만 알려져 있었다. 이렇게 보면 초창기 대구의 문화예술계가 ‘민족주의 정신의 발현’ 이라는 하나의 강고한 덩어리로 연계되어 있음을 알 수 있고, 대구는 곧 ‘민족정신의 본향’이라 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. Lying at the heart of the Yeongnam region, Daegu proved to be a special area during the modern era, and in particular the Japanese colonial period, in terms of culture and art. Daegu possessed an astonishing spiritual vein that is evident in the literature, art, and photography associated with various social movements. All of these fields shared the common goal of the ‘enhancement of the national spirit.’ At the time, these fields were not separated from one another and did not act independently like they do today. Rather, they more often than not converged and overlapped with one another. It was under such circumstances that local trailblazers in these respective fields, all of whom boasted a common awareness and ideology, actively cooperated with one another. During the early modern period, with much of this activity centering on 1907, a marked spirit animated all cultural and artistic fields. In this regard, this spirit was reflected in such undertakings as the social movement for the National Debt Repayment initiated by Seo Sangdon and Kim Gwangje; the literature circle established by Baek Giman and Yi Sanghwa; the early Western painting circle forged under the leadership of Kim Yongjun, Yi Inseong and Yi Kwaedae; and the photography circle led by Gu Wangsam. The central figures in terms of the establishment of this spirit included the poet Yi Sanghwa, Yi Sanghwa’s uncle Yi Ilwu, Yi Sanghwa’s brother Yi Sangjeong, the artist Seo Byeongoh, art theorist Kim Yongjun, and Yi Kwaedae’s brother Yi Myeonggeon. All of these trailblazers at the forefront of Daegu cultural and artistic circles were anti-Japanese nationalists. Yi Sanghwa originated from a nationalist family. Meanwhile, his uncle Yi Ilwu was a thorough anti-Japanese nationalist who had been one of the leaders of the National Debt Repayment Movement and various education programs. Yi’s brother Yi Sangjeong was an independence activist and artist. As far as the artistic circle was concerned, Kim Yongjun emerged as one of the main forces behind the organization of the ‘Hyangtohoe’ charged with establishing national art in 1930. However, the organization of this ‘Hyangtohoe’ has to this point been errantly perceived as having been dictated by Japan. Yi Myeonggeon, who was also a nationalist, an independence activist and artist, greatly influenced his younger brother Yi Kwaedae. The younger Yi, who focused on establishing national art, developed images that focused on the masses (minjung) which were at the time suffering from poverty and hunger. For his part, Gu Wangsam’s selection of his subjects was heavily influenced by his nationalist leanings. During the early stages of the modern era, Gu created works in Daegu, which at the time was known as the center of Korean photography. Nevertheless, Gu continues to be known only as a realist artist. The above examples make it clear that Daegu’s cultural and artistic circles were during the early stages of the modern era connected by a strong common desire to bring about the ‘enhancement of the nationalist spirit.’ In this regard, it would be no exaggeration to state that Daegu was at the time the ‘cradle of the national spirit.’ KCI Citation Count: 9
