『금석이야기집 今昔物語集』의 어령신앙(御霊信仰) 관련 설화에 대한 고찰

억울한 누명을 쓰고 죽은 자가 원령(怨靈)이 되어 지벌을 내리는 것을 어령(御靈)이라 하고, 그것을 믿는 것을 어령신앙이라 한다. 이러한 원령과 어령신앙은 일본 고대말 원정기에 성립된 설화집『금석이야기집 今昔物語集』에도 숫자는 적지만 대표적인 어령신이 된 나가야왕 長屋王, 후지와라노 히로쓰구 藤原廣嗣 그리고 도모노 요시오 伴善男등이 등장한다. 본고에서는 이들 어령의 특징과 당시의 일본고대인의 어령에 대한 인식이 어떠했는가를 정사의 사료와 비교하며 고찰하였다. 『금석이야기집』의 어령신앙 관련설화는 모두 고대 일본의 정치권력의 이해관계에서 패배한 인물이 특정 개인이나 사회에 지벌을 내리고 어령으로 신앙되었다는 점에서 공통적이다. 나가야왕, 후지와라노 히로쓰구, 도모노 요시오 등 어령신이 된 인물들은 정치권력의 이해관계에 연류되어 모함을 받아서 유배를 가는 등의 이유로 억울하게 죽게 되는데 이는 나라 말, 헤이안시기의 정치적 특징과 관련이 있다. 또한, 『금석이야기집』의 어령신앙 관련설화는 어령 신앙자체가 원령의 억울한 누명을 위로하여 그 지벌을 피하고자 했던 만큼, 역사적 사실(史實)과 비교했을 때, 원령의 입장에서 억울한 누명을 확실히 인정하며 때로는 그 인물을 신격화하며, 모두에게 신앙을 받고 있기에 그 지벌은 중단되어 더 이상 없거나, 약하다고 하는 내용을 전달하고 있다. 마지막으로 『금석이야기집』이 일본 고대시대의 선행 설화집을 거의 망라한 일대 설화집임에도 불구하고, 원령(어령)에 관한 설화가 매우 적고, 심지어 미치자네 원령신에 대한 언급하지 않는 것은 편찬의 목적과 관련되는 사안으로 이에 대한 고찰은 금후의 과제로 삼고자 한다. The Belief in ‘Reigning Spirit’ means that People have a belief in Mononoke[a vindictive spirit] who met a violent death, became a Spirit and inflicts divine punishment. In Konjaku monogatari made in the end of ancient Japan, representative Mononokes like Prince Nagaya, Fujiwara no Hirotsugu, and Domono Yoshio appears. The results of the review are as follows: First, all of tales in relation to the belief in ‘Reigning Spirit’ in Konjaku monogatari include the story in which the character that got defeated in a conflict of political interests is punishing specific individual or society and worshiped as ‘Reigning Spirit’. The character who became ‘Reigning Spirit’ like Prince Nagaya, Fujiwara no Hirotsugu, and Domono Yoshio got involved in political interest, was entrapped, was sent into exile and was killed on a false charge. This story helps us understand Regency―political characteristic in Heian Period of Japan. Second, as the belief in ‘Reigning Spirit’ itself aims to lay a revengeful spirit to rest for avoiding the punishment, in comparison with a historical fact, tales in relation to the belief in Reigning Spirit in Konjaku monogatari acknowlege the resentment over false charges from Mononoke’s point of view, sometimes deify that character and convey the contents that since Mononoke is worshiped by everyone, the punishment was stopped, got weaker or disappeared.
