Findings were that (1) the delinquent behavior rate of adolescents using alcohol, tobacco or other substances was higher than that of non-using adolescents, increasing the odds of delinquent behavior from 3 to 45 times. (2) The probability of delinquents in the substance users group was higher by 7 to 44 times than in the non-users group. (3) The relationship with delinquent behavior of risk factors and substance use was much stronger than the relationship with delinquent behavior of protective factors and substance use. (4) The strongest predictor of delinquent behavior or substance use was the peer-individual domain.
AbstractList 거의 대부분의 위험요인과 보호요인은 알코올, 약물사용, 비행행동 모두와 관련이 있는 중복요인으로 나타나고 있어 이러한 요인들은 예방 프로그램에서 알코올 및 약물사용이나 비행행동 모두에 대한 예방을 병행할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 한편, 약물사용에만 관련된 요인(가족영역의 "긍정적인 활동의 기회", "친사회적 활동에 대한 보상"), 학교영역의 위험요인들 같이 비행행동에 상대적으로 강하게 영향을 미치는 요인들은 각각의 예방 및 개입 프로그램을 개발할 때 중요하게 고려해야 할 내용으로 사료된다.본 연구의 제한점으로는 다음과 같은 것을 들 수 있다. 첫째, 표본과 대표성의 문제이다. 표집 된 사례가 301명으로 안정된 분석의 충분한 표집의 크기가 확보되지 못하였다. 또한 단지 4개 주의 한인 청소년들을 대상으로 하였고, 학교를 중퇴했거나 입원하고 있는 학생들을 포함하지 않고 있는 등 일반화의 어려움이 있다. 둘째, 표집과정에서 특정한 종교와 교육기관에 참여하고 있는 한인 학생에게 집중되었을 가능성이 있기 때문에 어떤 편향의 가능성을 배제하기 어렵다. 또한 표집의 어려움으로 인해 비행집단과 비비행집단을 구분하는데 있어 일반 청소년들을 대상으로 나누었기 때문에 실제로 비행의 정도가 심할 것으로 예상되는 집단에 대한 분석이 포함된다면 연구의 질과 의의를 높일 수 있으리라 생각된다. 셋째, 연구방식이 자기보고식 질문지에 기초하고 있다는 점이다. 따라서 반응자들이 자신의 행동들에 대해 과장 또는 과소하게 보고했을 가능성을 배제하기기 어려우며, 정보를 기억하는데도 어려움이 있을 수 있다. 넷째, 전적으로 자발적인 참여자에 한해서 연구가 이루어졌다는 점이다. 따라서 자기편향(self-section bias)이 있을 수 있다. 다섯째, 검사 도구에 있어서 기본적으로 측정자체는 미국인 중심의 측정을 위해 개발된 것이기 때문에 미국에 사는 한인 학생이라는 할지라도 한국인 고유한 변인을 측정에 포함하였더라면 약물남용의 문화적 요인에 대한 보다 많은 정보를 제공할 수 있으리라 본다. 여섯째, 비행행동에 있어서 가족의 보호요인이 영향력이 없는 것으로 나타나고 있는 점은 기존의 연구결과와 상반된 결과를 보이고 있는데, 이는 미국 내 한인 가정의 특성이라고 보기보다는 통제하지 못한 다른 변인의 효과일 가능성이 높다. 마지막으로 연구대상의 학년, 성별, 부모의 교육수준, 결혼 상태와 같은 인구학적 특성을 분류하여 분석하였더라면 그 특성에 따라 위험요인과 보호요인과의 의미 있는 관련성을 볼 수도 있었다고 사료되나 그렇게 하기에는 표본이 크지 않아 이러한 정보가 제시되지 못한 제한성이 있다.
