Abstract Buckwheat is a cereal grain consumed mainly in Asia. This crop has attracted attention owing to the recent increase in demand for alternative grains. Compared to other cereal crops, buckwheat has a higher protein content. It also has substantial quantities of dietary fiber and antioxidant flavonoids. However, there has been few studies on increasing buckwheat yield. In this study, eight buckwheat strains were used to investigate growth characteristics (such as height, stem diameter, number of nodes, number of pedicels, number of seeds per plant, total seed weight per plant, and one hundred grain weight) and flowering characteristics (such as flowering time, flowering period, maturity time, and maturity period). Plant height was found to be positively correlated with stem diameter, number of nodes, number of pedicels, and number of seeds per plant. Thus, if the characteristics of one trait are known, the characteristics of the other traits targeted for breeding can be predicted. Furthermore, individuals that were short, and had thick nodes, and large number of spikes were selected before sowing in the F4 generation; subsequently, it was confirmed that stem length decreased in all strains compared to that in the preceding spring and autumn studies. In the future, we will continue to progress generations by selecting individuals favoring increased yields, by performing growth investigations and tracking changes in traits according to selection.
