생태 리터러시로 최성각의 「잠자는 불」 읽기

이 글은 최성각의 중편소설 「잠자는 불」(1986)을 생태 리터러시(ecological literacy)의 관점에서 분석한다. 작품은 광산촌이라는 오염된 공간을 배경으로 환경 파괴가 인간의 정서와 공동체 윤리에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 감각적으로 형상화한다. 오염은 단순한 물리적 피해를 넘어 정서적 불안과 인간과 자연의 관계 단절로 이어진다. 2장에서는 반복되는 광산 사고와 죽음이 귀신이라는 집단적 상징으로 나타나는 과정을 통해 생태적 트라우마가 사회적 불안으로 전이되는 양상을 살핀다. 3장에서는 양호실과 병원이라는 공간을 중심으로 인물들이 감정을 회복하고 관계의 윤리를 형성해가는 과정을 분석한다. 이 글은 특히, 광산 사고로 가족을 잃은 주민들, 일상적인 돌봄 없이 성장한 아이들을 외면해왔던 서술자 ‘나’의 변화에 주목한다. ‘나’는 이들의 고통을 더 이상 외면하지 않고, 관계 맺기를 시도하며 자신의 태도와 인식을 조금씩 바꿔나간다. 이 변화는 공동체적 연대를 회복하려는 윤리적 움직임으로 이어지며, 타자의 고통에 응답하려는 자세로 나타난다. 이러한 흐름 속에서 「잠자는 불」 은 감각의 회복, 관계의 윤리, 공동체적 실천이라는 생태 리터러시의 핵심 요소를 서사적으로 구현하고, 독자에게도 생태적 감수성과 책임 있는 응답의 필요성을 환기한다. This paper analyzes Choi Sung-gak’s novella The Sleeping Fire (1986) from the perspective of ecological literacy. Set in a polluted mining village, the work sensually depicts how environmental destruction affects human emotions and the ethics of community. Pollution is shown to extend beyond physical damage, leading to emotional anxiety and the rupture of the relationship between humans and nature. Chapter 2 examines how repeated mining accidents and deaths appear as a collective symbol of ghosts, exploring how ecological trauma spreads into social anxiety. Chapter 3 focuses on spaces such as the school infirmary and hospital, analyzing how characters begin to recover emotionally and form ethical relationships. Drawing on the concept of jajeol (self-amputation), the chapter highlights the characters’ willingness to endure pain and reconnect with others through a renewed ethical sensibility. This paper pays particular attention to the transformation of the narrator, “I,” who has long ignored the suffering of residents who lost family members in mining accidents and children who grew up without daily care. The narrator no longer turns away from their pain and gradually changes in attitude and awareness by attempting to reestablish relationships. This transformation develops into an ethical effort to restore communal bonds and manifests as a willingness to respond to the suffering of others. Within this trajectory, The Sleeping Fire narratively embodies the core elements of ecological literacy―sensory restoration, ethical relationships, and communal practice―and reminds readers of the need for ecological sensitivity and responsible response.
