Abstract This study aims to determine visiting nurses’ perception of grief care they provide to bereaved families of patients with dementia. A questionnaire survey was administered to 57 visiting nurses. It included questions on the present situation of grief care and their perception on the subject. The results showed that visiting nurses provided support to the bereaved families of patients with dementia through home visits and telephone consultations for 49 days after patient death. A total of 51 consultations were received from the bereaved families of patients with dementia: 15 were related to daily life concerns, 14 to care and surrogate decision-making, 8 to symptoms of dementia, 7 to feelings of loss, and 7 to physical conditions. The descriptions of grief care as perceived by the visiting nurses were coded and divided into 23 categories from which 7 subcategories were further extracted. Visiting nurses perceive grief care as: [helping bereaved family to express their negative and positive feelings and thoughts], [offering empathy and support for feelings of grief], [affirming that proxy decision-making respects the personality of the patient with dementia], [addressing caregiver fatigue due to the progress of dementia], [allowing bereaved family members to share their feelings with each other], [ensuring proper utilization of social resources for future life], and [providing educational support to enhance knowledge on characteristics of mentia and the grieving process]. Keywords: grief care , visiting nurse , dementia, bereaved family , content analysis
