Abstract 「はじめに」 平成25年度厚生労働省から出された国民生活基礎調査によると, 自覚症状のあるもの(有訴者)の症状では男性では腰痛が人口千人あたり92.2人で, 平成22年に引き続き第一位, 女性でも肩こりに次いで118.2人と第二位である. また通院者率では腰痛症は男性で第4位, 女性で第2位であり, 国民の体の不調の訴えにおける腰痛の占める度合いは決して少なくない. 腰痛や腰椎の変性疾患のために移動能力が低下した高齢者は, 現在あるいは将来的に要介護となる危険性があり, ロコモティブシンドロームにおける重要な疾患に含まれる. 腰痛の原因として考えられるものに, 椎間板, 骨(椎体)椎間関節, 神経などが考えられるが, 原因を特定することが難しいことから約85%は原因の特定できない非特異的腰痛と言われている. しかし近年, この85%という数値が一人歩きし, 「腰痛は原因不明の病」との誤解が少なからず広まっていることに対し, 腰痛の原因を医学的に追求する意義が高まっているのも事実である.
