Summary:Care for mental disturbance in the patient with ventricular assist system (VAS)is not established. We evaluated psychological aspect of the patients who were considered to be the candidates for heart transplantation and studied the patients' behavior toward application of VAS. Self-consciousness of the patients was estimated by modified egogram method developed by Univ. of Tokyou and anxiety reaction to stressors was analyzed during application of VAS. Patients showed characteristic reactions to stressors and their reactions were affected by the mental status of them. These results suggest that evaluation of self-consciousness of the candidates for VAS application are important to understand the tendency of their behavior toward stressors, and it is desirable to perform the patients' care with the knowledge of mental status of them.
