The extant letters of Ignatius of Loyola total nearly some seven thousand, most of them from his years as superior general of the Jesuits, 1541–56.¹ The letter, as an instrument of governance, and as a medium for exchange of information, played no small role in the nascent Society of Jesus. The letter was also a literary genre at the center of sixteenth-century humanist practices, practices that informed and were promoted by Jesuit schools.
