교양기초교육을 통한 인문학과 대학 되살리기

이 글은 오늘날 국내 대학교육의 위기를 지적하고, 그 원인으로 외적 요인 못지않게 학문의 수장 역할을 자임해 온 인문학이 쇠락의 길을 걷고 그 내부에는 인문학자들의 혁신 의지가 없었다는 점을 지적한다. 인문학이 원래의 위상을 회복하기 위해서는 인문학자들이 협량한 학문 분야를 넘어서는 시선을 가질 필요가 있으며, 이를 위해 교양기초교육의 장에서 막 시작된 융·복합적 사고를 인문학 연구에도 도입할 것을 제안한다. 이 글은 그 사례로서 학제적 사고의 전범인 기호학적 관점에서 개발한 두 건의 융·복합 교양교과목 <그림읽기로 세상보기>와 <SciArt들여다보기>를 제시하고, 이 교과목의 개발과정과 내용에 담긴 인문학적 사고의 외연이 확장되었던 경험을 보고하면서 이를 통해 교양교과목의 발전이 역으로 인문학의 발전에 기여할 수 있음을 입증하고자 하였다. 마지막으로 이 글은 융·복합의 개념이 단순한 교육과정 개발에 멈추는 것이 아니라 학문의 재편성, 궁극적으로는 교육편제의 재편성에 이르러야 함을 역설하였다. 이 과정에서 최근 대두되는 학부대학의 유형을 조사하고 이러한 현상의 당위성을 옹호하고, 나아가 대학구조개혁에 임하는 인문학자들에게 사고의 전환을 호소하였다. In this article, we pointed out crisis of today’s higher education. Besides external factors causing the crisis, we are forced to admit that there has hardly been the aim of reform and innovation on the part of humanities scholars. Ignoring the up-to-dated needs of digital information industries and society, they have just stayed in the ‘department’ system, until the upcoming college reconstruction policy threatens them first. Now it is time for humanities scholars accept the convergence mind developed in the field of general education. We introduced two cases of convergent general education, <Reading World through Image Seeing> and <Encountering the SicArt>, that were developed with the fund from CONIEG. During the design and development of the two programs, we experienced that our attitude toward the humanities and the spectrum of knowledge became more expended and profound. Here we have some evidence that when humanities scholars accept and participate in the present general education renovation movement, i. e the convergent point of view, they can refine their own research fields and consequently, have more competitive and creative results. Convergence does not end at the program design. It can and must extend to the humanities and basic sciences, and consequently, to the college organization. We studied carefully the recent advent of liberal arts colleges and/or university colleges, and we could affirm that this trend was a due result of the present general education innovation. Through this process, humanities scholars who are confronted with the reconstruction and the college itself will be able to survive and make success. KCI Citation Count: 9
