| Abstract | Resumen El presente ensayo constituye una revisión sobre los determinantes sociales de la salud mental en cuanto al rol de la religiosidad de las personas desde la revisión bibliográfica y la experiencia personal. El objetivo del artículo es presentar el postulado de que la religiosidad de las personas puede influir en la salud mental mediante tres factores: sentido de valor moral, apoyo de la comunidad de fe y ejercicio de la espiritualidad. Se revisaron las bases de datos de Medline y SciELO desde el año 1990, en inglés y español, usando las palabras clave: "espiritualidad", "creencias", "religión" y "determinantes sociales de la salud mental"; además, se tuvieron en cuenta las referencias que tenían relación con el tema. Como conclusión se considera que en la bioética es importante incluir como factor en la salud mental el tema de la religiosidad desde el diálogo deliberativo, teniendo en cuenta la posición en que se encuentra el paciente como interlocutor. También es importante considerar el apoyo de una comunidad de fe que tenga incorporadas las virtudes de solidaridad y de aceptación del otro. |

| AbstractList | The social determinants of mental health with respect to the role of a person’s religiosity are examined in this paper, based on personal experience and a review of the literature. The objective is to hypothesize that religiosity can influence a person’s mental health through three factors: a sense of moral value, support from a community of faith, and exercise of spirituality. The Medline and SciElo databases were reviewed as of 1990, in English and Spanish, using the keywords: spirituality, belief, religion and social determinants of mental health. The references related to the subject were taken into account as well. The article concludes that it is important in bioethics to incorporate the theme of religiosity as a factor in mental health, based on deliberative dialogue and considering the patient’s position as an interlocutor. It also is imperative to bear in mind the support provided by a community of faith that has embraced the virtues of solidarity and acceptance of others.
O presente ensaio constitui uma revisão sobre os determinantes sociais da saúde mental quanto ao papel da religiosidade das pessoas a partir da revisão bibliográfica e da experiência pessoal. O objetivo do ensaio é apresentar o postulado de que a religiosidade das pessoas pode influir na saúde mental mediante três fatores: sentido de valor moral, apoio da comunidade de fé e exercício da espiritualidade. Revisaram-se os bancos de dados de Medline e SciElo desde o ano 1990, em inglês e espanhol, usando as palavras-chave: “espiritualidade”, “crenças”, “religião” e “determinantes sociais da saúde mental”; além disso, levaram-se em conta as referências que tinham relação com o tema. Como conclusão se considera que na bioética é importante incluir como fator na saúde mental o tema da religiosidade a partir do diálogo deliberativo, levando em consideração a posição em que se encontra o paciente como interlocutor. Também é importante considerar o apoio de uma comunidade de fé que tenha incorporadas as virtudes de solidariedade e de aceitação do outro.
