Abstract_FL The red fox(Vulpes vulpes)is a major mesopredator in the Helan Mountain region.Studying its diet is benefi-cial for understanding its interspecific relationships and ecosystem functions and for the important practical significance for assessing its survival status,formulating conservation management strategies,and monitoring biosecurity.The study inves-tigated the food composition and differences of red foxes in winter and summer in the Helan Mountain region using high-throughput techniques during 2020-2021.The results showed that red foxes primarily feed on the Cupressaceae,Rhamna-ceae,Vitaceae,and Rosaceae families(66.72%),and Bovidae and Columbidae families(89.53%).There was a signifi-cant difference in food composition between summer and winter,with red foxes mainly feeding on plants such as Junipe-rus,Vitis,Ziziphus,and Rosa,as well as Columba,Spermophilus,and Pseudois in summer,while in winter,Ulmus,Pseudois,and Cervus were the main sources of food besides Ziziphus and Juniperus.The diversity of plant-based foods was significantly higher in winter than in summer(Richness,P<0.05),while there was no difference in the diversity of animal-based foods between the two seasons(P>0.05).The similarity in food consumption between summer and winter was high,with food overlap indices(Schoener)greater than 0.60 in both seasons.These results provide fundamental data for accurately understanding the annual food composition of red foxes and protecting the main plant species and prey popu-lations consumed by red foxes to ensure population recovery of red foxes in the Helan Mountain region.
