Abstract La geografía es uno de los factores que influye en el desarrollo de las naciones puesto que de ella dependen la disponibilidad de recursos naturales, la productividad agrícola, el acceso a los mercados y la distribución de la población, entre otros aspectos. En este artículo se pretende mostrar cómo las variables geográficas influyen en el desempeño económico de los municipios colombianos. Se encuentra que estas variables influyen en el crecimiento económico municipal e, incluso, son un importante determinante del nivel de actividad económica actual. Si bien estas no son las únicas que determinan el desarrollo económico, es necesario controlarlas a través de las políticas adecuadas.

Geography is one of the factors that influences the development of nations. Natural resources availability, agricultural productivity, access to markets and population distribution, amongst other factors depend on the geographic distribution. This article aims to explain how geographic variables influence the economic performance and development of Colombian municipalities. It has been found that these variables have an effect on both municipalities economic growth and the corresponding policies. Even though these factors are not the only ones that determine the economic development; it is necessary to keep them under control through the adequate policies.
