Abstract_FL Reliability index is an important indicator for the power service level of a distribution system, and it could be highly improved by utilizing the closed-loop operation mode. First, this paper analyzes the drivers of introducing the closed-loop operation mode to distribution systems, including the increasingly growing penetration of distributed energy resources and user’s requirement for higher power supply reliability. Second, several key supporting technologies and benefits are investigated for the closed-loop operation mode of distribution systems, and a three-level framework is proposed for the centralized differential protection of closed-loop distribution systems. Finally, the paper discusses the prospects of applying the differential protection based closed-loop operation mode to distribution networks.
