Abstract We have analyzed theoretically the virtual slice-bolt corresponding optimizing control of basis weight profile in paper machines that was previously devised by the authors. It has the following features : (1) Optimizing control of basis weight profile in slice-bolt position generates a saw tooth profile between slice bolts, and does not satisfy quality demand in actual plants. (2) We have devised a virtual slice bolt corresponding profile that is obtained by averaging the basis weight raw profile not only on the position at each slice bolt but also on the intermediate point between the slice bolts. We have applied a virtual slice bolt corresponding optimizing control that minimizes the square sum of the profile errors and succeeded in satisfying the quality demand of actual plants sufficiently.
