Summary:Equipment to measure electrostriction constants directly from differential frequency responses between mechanical and electrical stimulations was designed. The electrostriction constant of unelongated samples of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and trifluoroethylene (TrFE) (54/46 mol% ratio) was measured as functions of static strain, temperature and remanent polarization. The electrostriction constants of all samples depended on the static strain. Two types of dependences of the electrostriction constant on remanent polarization were observed. These results indicated that the electrostriction of the poled sample stems from dimensional effect and that of the non-poled sample mainly from the intrinsic strain dependence of orientation fluctuation of dipoles in the crystal.
