Summary:The present study examines the wave pattern resistance analysis method the International Towing Tank Conference suggested. The wave elevation field around the scaled model of a container carrier is obtained by three approaches, i.e., the towing tank experiment, the panel method, and multi-phase computational fluid dynamics analysis. By the longitudinal wave cut method, the wave pattern resistance is obtained and compared with conventional wave-making resistance. The wave pattern resistance is smaller than the wave-making resistance for all approaches because of the wave-breaking resistance and linearized feature of the wave pattern resistance analysis. The extrapolation at the ship centerline showed a consistent estimation of wave pattern resistance, although the truncation of the downstream wave pattern is not considered.
