Abstract Lombard differentiates primary and secondary sources. The importance of understanding and using primary sources is noted by Frisch: "Primary sources provide the documentation for history as it is being made." Good work is available on this topic, but most consider retrieval and integration of primary sources into the curriculum rather than perceptions that exist about them. In addition, the focus is on students more than faculty. Underlying most of the literature is the assumption that the readers share a common understanding of what constitutes a primary source as opposed to a secondary.
AbstractList Library instruction typically asks users to find secondary and tertiary sources such as books, articles, and web sites. However, librarians should be responsible for all types of research, including primary. In addition, librarians should be capable of differentiating between the types of sources commonly used in the subject disciplines and helping students and faculty do the same. There appears to be inconsistency in defining whether a source is primary or secondary, in part due to semantics and to differences in fundamental perceptions among faculty. Regardless of the distinctions between primary and secondary sources, they must be referred to consistently at the institutional level. Whether primary sources are better than secondary sources depends on the expertise of the researcher in relation to the topic. Adapted from the source document.
