Summary:Biomedicine and nanotechnology are advancing at a breakneck speed resulted in an abundance of novel nanomaterials (NMs) based biomedical platforms. The 2D layered nano-structure material with discrete surface terminations and characteristics has shown enormous promise in diverse biological research, e.g. drug delivery, cancer treatments etc., that is the hot subject of recent era. Because of their nanometer thin two-dimensional (2D) planar morphology, highly effective specific surface area (SSA), plenteous functional groups on the surface, and novel physico-chemical properties, there is an increasing attention in investigating the possibilities of the MXenes family at the interface with living systems. MXene-based NMs can be employed as anticancer therapies, drug delivery platforms in photothermal therapy (PTT), or as nano-drugs without further modification. In this review, we will review current updates and potential of the MXenes in the biomedical applications. Therefore, we will review the recent developments, with a particular emphasis on cancer therapeutic/theranostics, biosensing, bioimaging, and antimicrobial therapies and finally, we will summarize the biocompatibility of MXenes NMs with their some limitations and future required advancements.
