Abstract By making simple compilations of culture results in clinical bacteriology, it was possible to examine the extent to which inpatients were at risk of acquiring infection in hospital. A surveillance system is described using results from routine bacteriological cultures. Pseudomonas isolates were common in the intensive care ward and was associated with contamination of respiratory equipment. Urinary-tract infections were frequent in the gynaecological and the male medical ward. Isolates of Bacillus spp. were used as an indication of environmental contamination of medical equipment or specimens.
