Summary:Currently, enormous economical and environmentally friendly fibers have been increasingly used to reinforce cementitious materials worldwide in the context of green and sustainable development. Among them, basalt macro fiber (BMF) has various attractive advantages including excellent mechanical properties, durability, cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. Based on a comprehensive review of literature, this paper provides a brief introduction to the chemistry, mechanical properties and production process of BMF, and a cutting-edge overview of basic mechanical properties and microstructural analysis of BMF-reinforced cementitious materials. In addition, this study also comprehensively compares the impact of various fibers on cementitious materials from the perspectives of strength enhancement, cost, energy consumption and CO2 emission of the cementitious materials with fibers. From the overall results, the substitution of BMF for a wide range of commonly used fibers offers not only a price advantage but also improved performance together with reduced energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
