Abstract To test the stability of role perception multidimensional scaling analyses were applied to family role constructs (Mother, Father, etc.) based on data from two methods which differed significantly in terms of the types of judgements of stimulus dissimilarity which were required. In the present application demonstrating stability of role perception reduced essentially to the problem of showing the statistical (rather, of course, than the strict mathematical) equivalence of two presumably multi normal data matrices. The problem, however, was complicated also not only because of the existence of individual differences in perceptual style but also because of the possible interaction of these with the method used for the assessment of subject judgements. An attempt was made, therefore, for both a statistical comparison as well as pattern comparisons after the data were factored along the lines of Tucker-Messick.

To test the stability of role perception, multidimensional scale analyses were applied to family role constructs (Mother, Father, etc) based on data from 2 methods which differed significantly in the types of judgments of stimulus dissimilarity which were required of the S's, who were members of 2 lower division psychology courses. For both methods, 7 stimuli were used: Mother, Father, Self, Ideal Man, Ideal Woman, Wife, & Husband. For the 1st method, S's estimated dissimilarity directly on a 7-point scale; for the 2nd, they judged the stimuli along 26 adjectival scales of the semantic differential type. In the present application, demonstrating stability of role perception reduced essentially to the problem of showing the statistical, rather than the strict mathematical, equivalence of 2 presumably multinormal data matrices. The problem was complicated not only because of the existence of individual differences in perceptual style, but because of possible interaction of these with the method used for the assessment of subject judgments. An attempt was made, for a statistical comparison & pattern comparison after the data were factored along the lines of L. Tucker & S. Messick ("An Individual Differences Model for Multidimensional Scaling," Psychometrica, 1963, 28, 4, 333-367). Intercorrelations of the resulting viewpoint variables & demographic measures were calculated, as were intercorrelations among the viewpoint variables. Although there were some similarities, intercorrelations between the viewpoints across methods were low. Method variance is concluded to be a significant component. 3 Tables, 1 Figure. Modified HA.
