Summary:Symbolic distances between social classes are based on categorization of social relations: how people asses and stratify themselves and the others. Using quantitative and qualitative data based on the national samples this analysis attempts to detect symbolic class distances in Poland. The research question is how strongly they influence social structure. The effect of symbolic class distances on social structure is measured in terms of similarity in hierarchies of occupational prestige and ‘just’ incomes. The analysis shows that the similarity between individual hierarchies of ‘just’ incomes more strongly affects the consolidation of social structure, which may suggest greater acceptance of distances created by distributional justice than those stemming from occupational prestige. This regularity is confirmed by in-depth interviews.
