Abstract The paper presents natural and cultural historical values and rarities of the Tara Na?tional Park, whose significance in the ecosystem and cultural terms exceeds national borders. Special emphasis is placed on forest ecosystems, the state of which is shown through a series of elements. Starting from the current state of forests, on the one hand, and the functionally optimal state, on the other hand, general and special management objectives dominated by the protective component are defined. All objectives are of equal importance and, mainly, of a long-term character. Their realization depends, among other things, on the degree of dispro?portion of the initial and optimal-target state. The realization of goals is achieved by a set of management measures, which are grouped into silvicultural and management measures, with special attention paid to the values of the felling ripeness diameter in the forests of fir, beech and spruce, as the most prevalent categories of forests. It was noted that the management of forests of the Tara National Park has mostly maintained and improved all forest functions, while at the same time striving to achieve the maximum possible production of wood volume of the best quality. In the future, in accordance with the control method of management, further permanent monitoring of National Park forests is necessary, timely reaction to the prevention of all negative trends in their development, intensification of scientific research in all segments of management, as well as review of the impact of passive protection of certain parts of the complex on the state of forests and the values that are protected.
