The hyperventilation syndrome is a common disorder characterized by alveolar hyperventilation which is inappropriate for the metabolic requirements and for the mechanical limits of the individual. Its clinical presentation is very much like that of asthma, which is an important differential diagnosis. Furthermore, hyperventilation is a frequent complication of asthma, increasing its severity and preventing its control. This syndrome must therefore be considered systematically when dealing with difficult cases of asthma, both for the differential diagnosis and as an aggregating factor. Idiopathic hyperventilation syndrome is diagnosed in cases with unexplained alveolar hyperventilation without evident organic pathology. When it is associated with asthma, the diagnosis of hyperventilation syndrome is based on evidence of discordance between the symptoms, the hyperventilation and control of the asthma. Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for both idiopathic and asthma-associated hyperventilation, resulting in better asthma control.
