Summary:The study aimed to identify the degree of practicing transformational leadership among heads of academic departments at Omar Al-Mukhtar University - Al-Bayda Branch - and its relationship with the level of functional performance from the viewpoint of faculty members. Both researchers adopted the descriptive correlational approach and used a questionnaire to collect data from a sample of (171) faculty members in the study population. The results revealed that the degree of practicing transformational leadership among aforementioned heads of academic departments was moderate in the tool as a whole and in all its fields. The study concluded that the level of functional performance of faculty members from their viewpoint was high. The findings indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the responses of the study sample due to the variables: (gender and academic rank) whether in the degree of practicing transformational leadership or in the level of functional performance. In the light of the findings, the study recommended providing heads of academic departments with professional development opportunities to enhance their administrative competencies, particularly transformational leadership, and offering professional development opportunities for faculty members to develop their technical and administrative competencies in general.
